Ok so there are two things you should know going into this review. I used to read the Holmes stories over and over as a kid but haven't read them for a few years now.
Also, I love Robert Downey Junior and would cheerfully pay to watch him stare at himself in the mirror.
So it's stupid. The plot is outrageous, there are tonnes of intoxicating substances, some punch ups, some explosions and a very silly bit with a ship. Thing is, except for the explosions and the ship, it's pretty much how I remember the books. Punch ups, bad disguises, notes to Watson and send him of to do his bit on trust, mad logic leaps over insanely complex plots, a dead guy with red hair and just a joy. Sit back relax enjoy a ludicrous romp.
To me it was in keeping with the spirit of the character and the books. It's nothing like previous TV incarnations. You need to just go and be open.
LOL -- sounds like a hoot. Wonder if there's a matinee this afternoon...

There was a matinee. I walked home, jumped in the car and went. Well, there were a couple of things that really drove me crazy: the first big headline that read "HOLMES *AIDES* POLICE" -- were they just afraid of using the word AIDS? And FFS!! since everybody in the film industry uses it as the short hand for gloom and doom prophecies and has no idea what's actually in it, could you for FUCK'S SAKE learn that it is the Book of REVELATION with NO 'S' on the end?! Kthx
That said, it was fun enough for an afternoon, just the kind of thing I was in the mood for after a too long day with too little done. Cute guys, fun adventures; trying not to think about how it and all the movies advertised were Movies without Women or Movies with 1 Woman (usually worse). For Ritchie apparently a woman can only be interesting if she acts like a man -- though of course she has to dress like a woman. I was entertained. Mark Strong -- pity he didn't have the long hair like when he was Septimus.
